Wave Theory was created by internationally renowned Vinyasa yoga teacher Shiva Rea.  Born to surfer parents and having grown up along the southern California coastline, Shiva always had a deep understanding of the power of the ocean, it's tides and the rhythms of it's waves.  When she began teaching yoga the connection between breath, prana, vinyasa and the ocean was clear.  Shiva’s Wave Theory is a multi-dimensional approach to sequencing that considers the fluid-pranic body and has roots in Krishnamacharya's vinyasa krama.

Local yoga teacher, Patty Donohue, received her 200 Hour Vinyasa Yoga certification from Shiva Rea in 2009.  Having studied Wave Theory and implemented these teachings over the past 10 years, Patty brings to light

how this powerful, transformative and exciting approach to sequencing will not only change the way you guide your students, but may also change the way you personally practice asana.


In this 3 hour CE course, teachers will:

  • Discover alternative approaches to sequencing a yoga class with a multiple peaks

  • Discuss the importance of finding an arc or wave within each series of postures where there's an initiation, full exploration and a pratikriyasana within each set series

  • Consider the ebb and flow of the primary vayus, prana and apana, and how well sequenced asana can balance the pranic body

  • Review a pre-written class sequence that exemplifies the Wave Theory style

  • Experience a Wave Theory practice and be able to have questions answered during the flow


Patty Donohue has practiced the traditional Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga with Nancy Wiegman since 1996, and began teaching a blend of classical and modern flow yoga in 2002.  Patty's style is an adaptation of “Wave Theory” vinyasa yoga which she learned during a 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training program with Shiva Rea in 2009.


She is an avid Ashtanga yoga practitioner who respects the core techniques of the Krishnamacharya lineage while incorporating other influences that have deepened her experience of yoga, such as dance - modern, jazz, ballet and Irish - and bodywork.  In addition to teaching yoga classes at the Chico Sports Club, she is program manager in educational technology for the California Community College System, and partner in a health and wellness retreats.   ​
